I got into the game again after not having played it for a good few years (I only had a Mac for a while as well which didn't help) and this just popped up into my head: what do we actually know for sure about Kikiyama?I've seen/heard anything and everything mentioned online, that it's a person, that it's a studio, that it's a man, that it's a woman.
I've seen an interview which many believe (me included) to be fake. Any available info seems to be shaky at best. The page with the most information on it seems to be but what on this page isn't conjecture is mostly incredibly vague. For example, the page states that 'KIKIYAMA has also been known to respond very infrequently and any response that is answered will be answered in a very short, straight-forward response', but are there any records of people actually receiving an email from them that have been verified? Where even does this information come from? Also has anyone attempted to contact the people behind the 'official' manga/light novels and the Yume Nikki project page to see if they had had a firsthand interaction with the developer/developers? As far as I've seen it doesn't seem to be the case. The manga's illustrator is Hitoshi Tomizawa who also made Alien Nine so he's fairly well known, and I've found a couple of interviews of him online but both of them predate the publication of the Yume Nikki manga.
When it comes to Akira (aka 日日日, up there among the most un-Googleable names ever), the author of the light novel, his official website seems to be down, and the only interviews that I found even in Japanese aren't about the Yume Nikki light novel and don't seem to make reference to it as far as I could tell.My search abilities are impeded by the fact that my Japanese is still extremely poor so I admittedly haven't truly pored through any Japanese-language pages on the matter but even then there doesn't seem to be a lot there. So what do we actually know? Is there even one sentence of text that we 100% know was typed/said by Kikiyama other than what's on the website (which hasn't been updated since 2008 which incredibly is almost 10 years ago now)?I guess what I'm saying is it could be interesting (even if this is very much after-the-fact) to try to gather actual information on this whole thing. I don't know, I'm curious but maybe everyone's moved on?. It's very hard to do because as far as I'm aware, there's nothing else Kikiyama is associated with on the internet. So they're either using a pseudonym or they legitimately just made yume nikki and then went back to doing whatever they were doing.
Due to that it's really hard to confirm any information, I don't think I've ever seen any screenshots of e-mails.Supposedly back when that yume nikki store was kicking up, they had a signing for the manga/OST (I think) in japan somewhere by Kikiyama? Of course, it's also very easy to say someone is Kikiyama when nobody seems to know who they actually are. If there's any place to start, it's probably there. Yes that's the catch, no other project under that name, no real name attached to the project, and no updates to the project or the website in nine bloody years.
I don't believe I've ever seen any screenshots of emails either.Actually I'm in Japan at the moment. I'm going back home in about a month but while I'm still here I thought it could be interesting to try to find out information first hand. Again the problem is I don't actually speak Japanese but I feel like it might be easier to get some info here. Also seems to be all but dead now. The website is still up and the images exist but none of the links send you anywhere. Now fortunately most of the website is still archive over at the internet archive. So I tried to look for news of this signing event, and seems to reference a commemoration for the tenth anniversary of the game. Said commemoration is at a store called Surpara in Akihabara (big surprise there) which is apparently still around (their website is still live and indicating business hours so it does seem to be up), and while it does mention special giveaways (first people who arrived at the store during a certain period would get free phone charms and magnets) there does not seem to be mention of a signing.
I went back a few pages and I couldn't find anything about a signing, but it's totally possible that it happened. The pages also mention specific items available at other stores in the area such as Toranoana and Animate, all of which are in Akihabara. Also has a page on Amazon Japan which does list 'Kikiyama/INFINITY∞' as an artist name but since all of the tracks on there are remixes that don't seem to be sourced from any original master tracks but more variations on the OST I think it's safe to assume that Kikiyama probably had no direct involvement in the making of the CD itself and INFINITY∞ is the main artist responsible for the versions of the tracks available on the CD. Though this is speculative since the page in itself doesn't contain any extra description beyond the usual track titles and release date.I think it could be an interesting thing to go over at the Surpara store in particular to try and see if there's any English-speaking staff who might be able to answer a couple of questions real quick. I'd really like to get a date and some more specifics on that signing beforehand though. I'll try to drop by that Surpara store over the week and try to engage a conversation with the staff and see if I can find out if such an event ever took place.
Should be interesting at least!Other than that, has anyone tried to contact the people in charge of these 'official' goods (especially the illustrator, writer of the light novel and soundtrack remixer) for more detail on the process of making their specific piece of media tied to the game, and if Kikiyama had any involvement in it at any point or if it was just basically a 'promoted fan' effort?.
About This GameAs long as I have dreams in my heart, I can never escape.I can never awaken from my dreams.Maybe if I follow the dream just past this doorway, then someday I can wake up again.
